Spellings Speaks at Council of Americas Conference
   - Secretary Spellings delivered remarks on the role of education in social and economic development to an audience of regional leaders, education ministers and CEOs at the Council of the Americas Conference in Washington, D.C. Her remarks were followed by a question and answer session.

2008 Summer Reading Initiative
   - Secretary Spellings; Wendy Bhagat, senior vice president, First Book; and Heidi Kilgras, editorial director, Random House Children's Books announced the availability of free books through the 2008 Summer Reading Initiative. Announced at Edward Brooke Charter School in Boston, Mass., the Initiative marks the first stage of a national distribution of over 850,000 free, new Random House children's books to schools, libraries and literacy organizations serving low-income youth across the country.

Secretary Highlights NCLB in Massachusetts
   - Secretary Spellings and in-coming Massachusetts Secretary of Education Paul Reville hosted an education policy roundtable discussion on No Child Left Behind at the Massachusetts State House with Massachusetts Acting Commissioner of Education Jeff Nellhaus, Massachusetts policymakers, educators, teachers, parents and business leaders. Secretary Spellings applauded Massachusetts' efforts to raise content standards of assessments and discussed opportunities for improvement and innovation under No Child Left Behind.

Educators: Register Now for Summer Workshops
   - Teachers and other educators are encouraged to register now to attend one of the U.S. Department of Education's summer workshops, where teachers share successful strategies to raise student achievement.

Teaching Resources: Skin, Bones, Louisiana Purchase and More
   - Skin, muscle, bone, cellular and molecular biology, the Louisiana Purchase, slavery, and maps of a voyage by Sir Frances Drake are among the topics of new resources at FREE, the website that makes teaching resources from federal agencies easier to find.

New Grant Opportunities
   - Notices inviting applications have been issued recently under ED programs that include the following: Emergency Management for Higher Education Grants, Center on Postsecondary Education for Students with Intellectual Disabilities, and Centers for Independent Living.
