East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools, which is one of the largest school districts in the area, serves the public schools in Baton Rouge. There are several elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Baton Rouge Magnet High School is one of the high schools in Baton Rouge. The school became a full magnet school and using the curriculum in 1976. The class of 1980 was the first class to complete four years of their education in a magnet school. In the past, the students excelled in their academics and in sports, but as of 1976, the major sports such as basketball, football, and baseball were discontinued when the school became a magnet school. Besides these schools, Louisiana State University, which is a public, co-educational insitute, is in Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge Community College is also located in Baton Rouge. It is a two-year college for students who desire to go two years instead of the four-year colleges. However, students can transfer after their two years to a four-year college to continue their education. Their education leads to transfer credits, certificates, and to associate degrees.
