Worcester Public School System provides education for the public schools in Worcester. There are several elementary schools, four middle schools, seven high schools, and several magnet schools, alternative schools, and special education schools. Besides the public schools, there are twenty-one private and parochial schools. In addition to these schools, there are nine colleges and universities. Worcester Academy, which is an independent preparatory school for men and women, provides education for students in middle school and high school. Bancroft School, which is a private preparatory school, provides education for kindergarten through twelfth grade in three separate facilities: elementary, middle school, and high school. The College of the Holy Cross, which is an undergraduate Roman Catholic Liberal Arts College, is the oldest Roman Catholic college in New England. It is also one of the oldest Roman Catholic colleges in the United States. Clark University, which began as a private teaching and research university, has focused on providing undergraduate education to students instead of focusing on graduate studies in teaching and research.
