  • This is a reminiscence, with no factual resemblance to the present school. I graduated 8th grade in 1956, and the C grade reflects the SHS I experienced.
There were always 2 and sometimes 3 grades in a room (one year, one teacher taught grades 1,2,and 3, about 75 students, all in one room -- there was a good reason why my mother always called her "poor little" Sister Hilda).
In 1949, there were still outhouses near the field of crushed rock (aka playground), which we were required to use during recess. The interior of the school smelled of floor wax, chalk dust, and sweat.
No one had ever heard of "learning disabilities;" there were only good children and bad children. Bad children could be and were "whipped," i.e., numerous smacks laid on with a ruler or floor brush. "Siege mentality" Catholocism was still in vogue, and it was considered "an occasion of sin" for girls from SHS to attend Girl Scouts at Valley Park School, about 2 blocks away. A diploma from SHS certainly didn't open any doors, socially or profesionally, for the alumni.
Having said that, I am now pushing 65 and am still in fairly regular contact with the other four girls from my class, plus several from the classes that "bracketed" ours. None of us dropped out. We live from the east coast to the west and all became responsible citizens and householders. All of us are parents and grandparents. We did learn to read, spell, write grammatically, and can still recite our "times tables" in our sleep. If the Tridentine mass were reinstated, I know the Latin responses and prayers and could sing "Dies irae, dies ira" by heart.
It was not fun, but we somehow survived to have real lives. When I went to the SH "reunion" in 1991 the church hall was the same, but there was an entirely new school and a sufficiency of teachers, with all the modern fixin's. It bore no resemblance to my "alma mater."

  • I attended Sacred Heart from 1948 til I graduated in 1956.

From grades 1 thru 8, there were only 5 of us girls, and 8 boys.

Those were the good old days for young students, growing up. There was no such thing as dope, drugs, and all the other negative vices that are in the schools of today.
I will always have fond memories of Sacred Heart.

  • Basically, I have good childhood memories of SHS.
    Will never forget Sister Emelda.
My only regret is that although I was very weak in arithmetic throughout my 8 yrs. in grade school, there was no one at Sacred Heart to help me with this subject.
As a result, I did poorly in high school with math.
Other than that, it was a pleasant experience during my childhood years.
