  • I graduated from McGuffey in 2003, attended the local public high school, Talawanda High School, all four years, and am now pursuing a B.A. in Urban Education at Stanford University.

After having studied numerous schools at Stanford in lieu of my degree, and having taught in one public middle school for a year through the Americorps program City Year, I am perpetually amazed and grateful for having received such an incredible educational experience at McGuffey. I would absolutely recommend the school to anyone. McGuffey students are part of a very close community and a very flexible, creative, fun, and profound learning environment. They develop an appreciation for knowledge, and are encouraged at every opportunity to develop their own individual personalities. McGuffey students are almost uniformly very motivated, and are enthusiastic about exploring new areas of knowledge and plumbing the depths of old ones. Actually, they're enthusiastic about nearly everything, while being able to maintain a strong balance of deep thought and playful creativity. Students enthusiasm is also reflected in parents' strong involvement in the functions of the school, as well as the close-knit alumni network.

Yet for the closeness of the community, students are by no means at a loss in the bigger world outside of McGuffey. I loved my four years in public high school after my nine years at McGuffey, as did my sister after her six at McGuffey, as did all my fellow McGuffey graduates at all the different schools they attended.

McGuffey has the best sense of "fit" I've ever encountered (unless there's some new crazy policy in place at the school, it is pure myth that students must pass some sort of aptitude test-or any test at all-to go to McGuffey). I encourage every parent to get to know the school well.
