  • Sumter Academy is a very important asset to Sumter County. Without Sumter Academy, our options for educating our children would be greatly diminished. There are great people here and many who work very hard to improve the school and our community. Substantial improvements have been made at Sumter Academy recently. The outlook and attitude on campus is very positive. Unfortunately there are those in every community who always express negative views. Typically, they are not the parents who work the concession stands, or help paint the school, or participate in fundraisers, or just give their time for the sake of their kids. Unfortunately, they, nor their children by example, will ever understand the rewards of such activities.

  • I am a S.A. alumni. I am sad to say that Sumter Academy is not what it once was. Our two sons attended until our oldest finished the seventh grade. We became increasingly dissatisfied with the high turnover in teachers and increase in discipline problems. We felt S.A.'s state test scores in comparison to those in nearby public schools were not that significant and not worth the tuition. Though the math team places every year, the average student is left behind. There are science and English classes in the high school that are now being taught by uncertified teachers. Gossip effects both students and families. We would not suggest relocation to this area.

  • I have had children in Sumter Academy for the past 16 years. My children have received excellent educations from Sumter Academy. Thanks to educational foundation from Sumter Academy, my oldest daughter graduated with honors in Biomedical Science from Auburn University and now has been accepted into medical school at U.A.B.
Extracurricular activities are also available. For instance the math team, headed by Ms. Bonner, is always a contender in the yearly state math competition and Sumter Academy won it again in 2005.
The sports program is very important at any small school as the students learn many lessons about life from involvement in sports activities. Sumter Academy coaches do an excellent job teaching the rewards and benefits of hard work.
The new headmaster, Paul Kirchharr, is doing a great job and is a real disciplinarian. Paul has been very successful at implementing new disciplinary policies. Many new faculty members were also added this year and the overall strength of the faculty is substantially improved. The entire school has a very positive attitude and good things are happening at Sumter Academy.
SUMTER ACADEMY Average ACT Score 21.1
    National Average ACT Score 20.9
Southern States Average ACT Score 20.2

In my opinion, Sumter Academy is the best school in West Alabama and still improving. Sumter Academy is the reason I live in Sumter County. If you are considering moving to the area, then welcome to West Alabama and welcome to Sumter Academy where a good education awaits your children.

  • Sumter Academy is not what it appears when your children first attend.
There are no extra curricular activities except sports. If your child does not excell in sports, they will be ridiculed and outcast. The discipline is not consistent, the student handbook is not followed, and the high school teachers are not qualified. Many people leave after a short time. The elementary building is run well, but children and their families are belittled and gossiped about. I would not recommend relocation to this area or school to anyone.
