- We had four wonderful years at Barbereux. I sincerely wish we had not stayed for the fifth year under a new director with new teachers in the K-1 room. The teachers had poor classroom management skills. They allowed kids to drift off and did not work on getting kids to stick to and through a task. The final straw for us came when the assistant teacher withheld lunch for punishment, and the director was completely unwilling to investigate the incident. The director has no prior experience in this age group. He was hired b/c he's a friend of the board, which actively discourages parent involvement in many ways. This school needs to hire a new director from outside who knows what they are doing. The upstairs teachers are great, but are being forced out by the board. The quality of this school has gone downhill in the last two years.

(Rating: 1 / 5) Report As Inappropriate - I sent two children to Barbereux. My oldest had a mixed experience in the Junior Kindergarten; she has a slight speech/language disorder and the teachers seemed unsure of how to handle her; they failed to let me know until late in the year that she was having some difficulty being accepted by some of the other girls. But both kids had a wonderful experience in the preschool classroom (ages 2-3), which was under the direction of a loving, committed, creative teacher who had been there for 8 years. She was forced out this summer by the new director, and the board has closed ranks around him, despite protests by the parent community. The management style now seems to be that anyone, staff or parent, who disagrees with him can simply leave. It is legitimate for parents to question the wisdom of entrusting their children to the care of an administration that has treated its employees in such a heartless fashion. I used to give this school my heartfelt recommendation; but this is now a troubled place and I can no longer recommend it.
