  • I have waited many years to post this review. I believe that if you write a review about something while you are involved in it then it’s hard not to be subjective. Let me tell you about our children and you can be the judge about Shalimar Elementary.

My wife and I have three children, two boys and one girl. They are each four years apart and they all attended Shalimar Elementary. They each were in skits and plays, they each loved their teachers, they adore Coach, and most importantly they love to read, perform math, and are very social.

This year my daughter graduates from Choctawhatchee high school. After 20 years she is our last one to go through the Okaloosa county school system.

So what have they accomplished? Let me share. Our oldest graduated from the University of Central Florida and became a teacher at Choctawhatchee high school. He decided to travel and is now teaching English in Korea. The education and confidence he gained growing up in our great school system empowered him to be able to take on such a challenge. Our youngest son graduated Summa Cum Laude from Choctawhatchee and is in his senior year at UCF. He will graduate with a computer science and math degree. Not bad huh! My daughter, well she enjoys a challenge. She will be on the stage for graduation this May at Choctawhatchee high school. She was on the homecoming court, like her brothers she was in the amazing CHS band, voted most fashionable, and the thing I am most proud of her for is she too is graduating Summa Cum Laude. It took only 4 days, two of them Saturday and Sunday, for her to be accepted to her college of choice…UCF.

I know some of you might be thinking this is bragging. If you are then you need to take a closer look. If you knew me you would know my children are not genetically blessed with great intelligence. Their success is a direct reflection of their environment, of a commitment by this community to provide our children with an opportunity. I knew we were doing things right when our oldest son wrote us and said “Thank you; I didn’t realize how great of a childhood I had until I met people from other areas.”

I leave you with this. It might sound harsh. If your child fails while attending school within the Okaloosa county school system…then you didn’t get involved and they will have to pay for your mistake.

    Signed,
Little league coach, team mom, soccer coach, team mom, basketball coach, team mom, boy scout leader, scout mom, band parents, chaperones, press box announcer, flag wavers, and proud parents!
