  • I am not overly impressed with the Pahoa Elementery School. I have two children that attend there. The teachers that have been there for a really long time are worthless. The newer teachers seem to do a better job and have adopted newer ideas. There are notes hanging all over about bullying and to report it. The problem is not just the schools. Part of the issue is the culture of the community and many of the parents. The school loads the kids up with homework and expect the parents to teach. Also the health aide is kind of crazy. She talks about her personal issues and is generally mean to the kids. If you can afford to put your children in a private school it is strongly recommended.

  • As a parent, you always want to know what is going on with your child at school. Pahoa Elem doesn't think that is important. Administration there doesn't care about bullying, and bullies are protected at the school by family members there. I would suggest taking your kid to a different school, one that gets better reviews and test scores. None of my children will ever attend that school again. My seven year old was attacked recently and the school lied to me about the incident. I had to call the district office to get them to speak to me about the assault.

How would you feel if your childs school called and told you she missed the bus because she was goofing off with her friends, when in reality the school had her in a conference becuase she had been assaulted. Lucky for me, another parent that saw the incident and was able to tell me what had happened, but sadly enough Pahoa Elem couldn't. When I was finally able to talk to the principal I was told I hadn't received a call back because they didn't owe me any type of information about the incident since I chose to withdraw her after the incident.

Imagine a school telling me I had no rigth to know what had happened to my child and what they were doing to fix it becuase I took her out of that enviroment.

After a conference at the school (one of what feels like dozens) where we discussed this problem I still felt that the school was more interested in blaming the victim, and when that didn't work, then any other scapegoat including their own teachers and mediators. Administration took no responsibilty for the fact that they are supposed to have staff that keeps the children there safe. In my opinion they are more interested in having me go away and not cause a stink than in making sure the school is safe.

At her old school, my daughter woke up every morning wanting to go to school. When we started at Pahoa Elem, that changed to "I hate school." Hopefully, now she doesn't attend there anymore she will regain her love of school again.
