  • I attended schiller elementary in 1966. My teacher name was Helen Wozinak was my 6th grade teacher. I had alot of issues and challenges and Ms Wozinak use them all against me. She announced to all 40 of my classmates that I was the dumbest kid in class. She put me in the back of the classroom. and treat me in a matter in which my classmate tainted bullied and scorned me. At one point I even pondered suicide in order to gain sympathy from her and my fellow classmates. If it was'nt for a few of my classmates who saw what this woman was doing to me I would have surely jumped out of my sixteenth bedroom window.Ms. Wozinzak abuse became so bad that the kids who use to taint me began to help me endure her daily punishing abuse. When the last quarter report cards were issued she had each one of come up to receive them. When I was called she handed me my card and said to me in front of the whole class"Sorry Greg you did'nt make it see you next year." But for some reason Inwhich I can't figure out she let me proceed to the next grade. But she did humiliate me in front of all my classmates. For a teacher who did what she did the way she did to me and other students she should not only have not been ceritified to teach but arrest and the school system should have been sued. One should go to school to learn instead of learn to "survive" in the chicago school system. I am proof that what makes rotten students is rotten teachers. Not all cause I do and did have mentors who were passinate and caring human beings not one who felt that she was better than life itself because she went to europe one summer and took only the smart kids on field trips. I when became an adult and moved to South Dakota I sought Miss Wozinak to inform her that I graduated from high school and was trying to get a college education. And. All what she did to me hurt me beyond the point to where I left that classroom with more than my head down. It was my fellow students in my very own classmate who lifted me up, wiped my tears from my eyes and told me to try harder. This was my very first experience positive with positive reinforcement. From children like myself in the carbrini green projects.

  • I remember the old Schiller School that was built around 1879. right after the Chicago Fire of 1871.In the 1960s I use to run in the hallways of this enormous school. the step were so wide you we had to take two steps to get to the next step. This three story building was high as today's six story building. The basement had classrooms and plenty of places to hide from your teacher. usually they put the bad children in the basement classroom because we made so much noise. my teacher was the most kindest teacher i have ever known. There were so many field trips that I thought the field museum was our second class room. I remember how much fun schiller was for the Cabrini Green Community. i was sad when we had to move to the new building.
