- Many aspects of life at Riverside Elementary School provided for its excellence. If I were to focus on the trait that sticks out above the rest, it's the fact that the faculty AND staff were respected. Faculty and staff perfected the dance of being both the students' friend and mentor. They sought to show students education was fun, but it was well known that high expectations were to be met, if not exceeded.
The principal, Mrs. Engler, clearly set the standard. My memory of Lyceums is the most pointed example of this "dance," combining fun with expectations. Every student looked forward to the lyceums. They were highlights of our time at Riverside. We had a blast, but when we crossed the line, Mrs. Engler abruptly interrupted the lyceum to call the crowd back to attention with her famous "clap-clap clap-clap-clap."
That simple use of such a clap embedded an important lesson. It was short and to the point and taught us as early as Kindergarten that fun was important, but to not lose focus or control. Such a simple, but valuable, lesson.
Mrs. Engler deserves great credit for her consistent standards of excellence as past teachers retired and new teachers joined the Riverside team.
