  • I graduated from Berne Union in 1963 and didn't realize, until many years later, what a wonderful and idyllic experience the 12 years that I spent there was. In fact, as a high school and college teacher of 39 years now (as of 2007), I envy some of the aspects of the education that I received there and can only hope that the kids at BU are still enjoying those features today. Of course the 50's and 60's were kind of a golden age in the post WWII era, and unknown to us, it was an age of innocence. But the intimacy of knowing everyone and the deep concern shown by the teachers and community is something often missing in the large urban and suburban schools. Granted, there were trade offs; the curriculum was limited and for the college-bound kid, competition was not intense. I felt quite special that Mr. Schultz taught me Physics when no one else signed up for it--I just sat in his chemistry class and worked on physics. In many ways, living near Sugar Grove and going through grades 1-12 at Berne Union was about as close to perfect as life could be. It's too bad that the small-town American school is vanishing all too quickly.
