  • Thanks for the Valentine I found on my doorknob. At my age, one doesn't get many valentines. (yours was the only one) I guess it was MS Bowlin's crew who also placed the Christmas tree on my door for the holidays...I enjoyed it and left it up until after New Years. I used to teach poetry in the public schools back east and enjoyed it very much. Here's one of my poems:

    MOVING TO ELDERLY HOUSING

    His belongings are packed,
    drawerfuls, sacked, boxed:
the total of seventy two years.
    He'll divvy up his collection
    of sockets, ratchets, wrenches,
    saws--among his sons in law.
    (Their turn to skin knuckles)
    Sometime during the seventy
    two year night burglars broke
in and stoled his TV and radio,
    his wife, kids and machismo.
They killed his dogs and cats
and now they're stealing his mind.
The old man isn't fit enough
to be moving sofas and chairs
so he pays a mover and helper
    to portage the heavy furniture.
The lighter items, like his heart,
albeit a trifle heavy this morning,
he loads onto the seat of his Ford.
