  • I was public-schooled through the 7th grade, at which point I transferred to Dehesa Charter. I am currently in 12th grade, graduating a year early, with over a hundred college credits under my belt. The difference between Dehesa and most schools is that the teachers and EFs (Educational Facilitators) actually care about their student's well being. The flexible nature of this school allows for two kinds of students: those who are extremely goal oriented and wish to take on more than they could in another school, and those who need more help than they could get in another school. Many of Dehesa's students go here because they struggle enormously in a typically structured school environment, and need extra help to learn. Some students have a difficult time because of disabilities or hard family life, and Dehesa makes it possible for them to graduate, where they would have long dropped out of a typical school. I have had chances to do things I could not do in other schools: I took a road trip and was able to count visits to art and history museums for class credit, and I was assisted by the school in registering and completing college courses before I was even out of middle school. There is a social environment in Dehesa too, various field trips for nearly every subject are available, and the school also has such organizations as a Robotics team and a Mock Trial team. I don't know what kind of experience the parent who wrote the other review had, but I can say that they missed the point of this school. This school is not about teaching for the tests (as most schools do). This school is about true learning, and becoming more educated people, so that we (the students) can be well prepared for our roles in the future of society. If you have any doubts about this, please ask any one of my fellow classmates, or their parents or teachers.
