  • Honestly, I was just browsing to find a 1984Delano High year book, but since there is an opportunity for feedback, here it is…
If this school still operates the same as it did in 1983-1986 then the parents need to get involved and push the teachers to challenge their children...with a school of 70% migrate workers who speak very little or no English, this is highly unlikely...kids just get by with the basics at Delano High. Shame on the teachers who discriminate their time to the more advantageous students…I remember how my parents were only contacted due to negative issues not related to curriculum...when I started college, my first two years were difficult as I had to learn all standard levels of general college ed, all which were never taught to me at that school. After two years in college my classes became a breeze; I graduated from Fresno State with a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Math...this is from a former Delano HS student whose highest math taken was BASIC MATH. The thought of the number of students left behind in just "basic" curriculum and who may never challenge themselves to the next level, makes me angry...all it takes is one good teacher to make a difference in a student’s life. I believe if Delano High was doing it’s job, then the little town would show it…I mean, I have seen it’s growth in housing and prisons, but honestly, it’s appearance has gone “ghetto,” which in my opinion tells me two things…either all the successful generations leave town or there are minimal to none being guided beyond a HS education…makes me wonder about the people running Delano…did they get beyond a Delano High diploma? My message to the school district: Invest in teachers that care and will go the extra mile to help students from non-English speaking families, break down curriculum to the parent’s level for the success of their children and hold mandatory parents conference in their language…break the cycle.
Ignorance can be cured with knowledge, with the school’s help, these parents (such as my own) have a better chance of guiding their children to a better future other then the “fields” and preventing influence of gang life.

  • My name is David Pierro,
I attended Delano High from 1955-1959. I found it to be an excellent school. After graduating from there in '59, I was able go on an earn my BA as Fresno State.
