  • I feel that Halifax Area High School gives its students a 'moderate' education. For the students who are willing to work extra-hard without receiving much recognition (such as a higher grade point average), HHS should work for them. The biggest problem with the school from the academic standpoint is the school does not want to flunk students -even those students who don't apply themselves. Regardless of the reason, some students realize this and don't study at all for their tests. Therefore, some of the teachers feel obligated to make easier tests rather than flunk students who refuse to study. This creates an environment where twenty or so students per grade, (the students who study) have a GPA of over 99%.
Halifax High School offers two Advanced Placement courses - AP English and AP Calculus. Therefore, students who take these courses are generally prepared for college. (The students who take general courses are not very prepared in my opinion.)
As for the behavior of the students, I feel that many of them understand the basic concepts of respecting and understanding other people. However, even this area could show some improvement.
Many of the teachers at HHS are very nice people, although they may not always be the most receptive to the opinions of parents concerning novels students must read.
Overall, the school is certainly one that you can send your children to without a fear of them becoming 'hippies' or 'druggies.' However, if you want your child to attend Harvard or Princeton after graduation, I would recommend you move to Derry Township, Cumberland Valley, or Camp Hill school district.
