  • I have had 3 children graduate from Volunteer High School. It always seemed like an "okay" school. I was appalled to learn as my third child entered into college that he was allowed to graduate high school not knowing how to properly write an essay. As a few more months went on, I was angry to find out that my child has a Learning Disability. This disability did not come about overnight. Teachers of this school referred to my child as unwilling to learn, a disruption in class. They could not see that actually, the inability to learn was due to a disability. The college hired a professional evaluator to test my child. I was very disturbed by his response when I told him that my child graduated from Volunteer High School. I will not repeat his response.
I called the guidance office at Volunteer after hearing from the college. The response I received was, "Oh really, how strange!" That was it! Nothing else said, I guess I should not have expected any more. Perhaps the Hawkins County School District needs to revisit their curriculum, teachers, and class-end evaluations. Let's not allow other children to slip through the crack, if that is what you call it, and start college unprepared. It is embarrassing, unacceptable, & discouraging to the student who is trying to achieve life long dreams.
