Briarhill Middle School serves 6th through 8th Grade Students From The City Of Highland Village, Which Is Part Of Denton County. Some Or All Students From This School Participate In Free Or Reduced Lunch Programs.
This school has gone down hill since the administration changed several years ago. The new administration makes rules as they go and in my opinion do not treat the children with equality.
The vice principal and the principal support each other regardless of any situation making it very difficult to communicate with either of them. There is no principal/parent balance.
Parent's that complain, beware, because retaliation flows up hill(even though it's against the law).
The student body consists mostly of good kids, but the peer pressure in this school is thicker than any I have ever seen. What is beyond frightening about the student body is the sexual revolution that is taking place. (I'll reserve further comment in case of younger readers.)
Education wise if you can get past all of the other issues is about equal to other area schools. I believe most of the teachers are well qualified and most are very personable.
From my experiences with this school, if there were choices as to which middle school I would put my children in, I would probably pick a different one at least until the administration changed dramatically.
Overall the teachers seem pretty nice. What is frightening about this school is the awful peer pressure. From conversations with other parents as well as my own kids, it would seem that superficiality and a culture of petty bullying runs rampant. There's more to school than just the academic education. Ensuring a tolerance for diversity and an intolerance for mean behavior would provide a good example for these kids; not only now, but throughout the rest of their lives. I'm unclear this example is being shown, and I wonder about the long term effects. I believe there is competence in the academic teaching, but perhaps a lack of initiative in reaching beyond the scope and truly trying to turn out not only academically smart children, but also well-rounded, open minded culturally intelligent children. If any of these kids go to truly first rate colleges, I'm unclear how they'll be accepted within a more intellectual climate. Thank you.
