Description

In this lesson, the students will write a book review of The Hobbit by J. R.R. Tolkien. You might need to explain to the students about writing book reviews before they begin writing them.

Goals

Learn about writing book reviews
Learn how to locate specific examples in text
Edit their papers before typing the final drafts

Materials Needed

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Notebook paper
Pens
Computer and paper

Procedure

First, you might need to explain to the students how to write a book review. They should write the name of the book and the author and what they thought of the book. They also need to state their reasons why they liked the book. In addition to writing their opinions of the book, they need to include a short summary of the book to entice the readers to read it. When they write their summary, they need to include the main character and the villain as well as the main points of the book and what the main character has experienced. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. What happened in this book? Who was the main character? Who was the villain? The important thing is to leave the readers hanging, so they will want to pick up the book and read it. Book reviews include the writer's opinion of the book and not just the plot summary, which includes only the plot. When they have completed their rough draft of their book reviews, they can type the final copy on the computer and submit them to you for grading.

Grading

You can grade them on their book reviews on the organization and on spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph structure.
