(1 / 5) Flag as inappropriate - Principal Foxton does not seem to understand the importance of providing a nurturing, safe learning environment for the young minds entrusted to her and the teachers at Vestal Elementary School. Any school that permits a first grade teacher to call students by number because she cannot remember their names should re-examine their minimum standards. These are the formative years, and treating students, especially children, as numbers would have been unthinkable when I was attending Portland Public Schools.
Let’s demand more from our educators! And, in turn, let’s reward the ones who meet and exceed our expectations with financial rewards and unique learning experiences outside the classroom. Conversely, we need to bring teachers who have lost their direction and get them back on track through coaching, peer mentoring, and in extreme cases, discipline and loss of tenure.
I hope school officials, parents, and other members of the community will use this information to urge Vestal School to pursue higher standards.
