(5 / 5) Flag as inappropriate - WSMS delivers a solid core education and offers a great environment for children to earn confidence and develop leadership skills. We enrolled our daughter at the White Bear Montessori (WBMS) three years ago (when she was 3 y/o) and are so very pleased with her development thus far. She is thriving and, most importantly, loves the school and the teachers.
WBMS has beautiful facility, it offers a classic Montessori education that integrates art, music, dance, cooking, and outdoor play into a time-tested curriculum in the core areas of language, geography and cultural studies, math, and science. Instruction in Spanish is also included, and we like to observe how the Montessori Method enables the well-trained and caring teachers to give our daughter a variety of individual lessons throughout the day, all of which are taught with carefully prepared Montessori materials.
But, most of all, we love the ways in which WBMS implements the Montessori philosophy of a well-rounded education that teaches our daughter grace and courtesy, how to care for her environment, and a wide range of practical life skills that are helping her develop independence and self-confidence. We, the parents, are always welcome to visit the school and join in various activities, and the Director has been responsive, willing to address our concerns, and happy to share with us her vast knowledge and experience.
Let me emphasize that WBMS provides AMI Montessori education and follows classic curriculum and method. Montessori students are taught to be involved in self-selected work, bear in mind that teaching a child to choose what to do is not the same as letting him or her do whatever they want.
Having gone to a traditional school myself, and never having any exposure to the Montessori Method, it has seemed at times to be a little wacky. Coffee Work? How could that help??? I don’t know, but my daughter who will graduate from Kindergarten in a couple months, can not only read, but they have her reading stories out loud to the toddler class. She can add, subtract, and she understands the concepts of multiplication and division. She is constantly making comments that make our jaws drop as she understands concepts well beyond her age.
If you consider a Montessori education for your child, I recommend WBMS wholeheartedly. For us, it strikes just the right balance of a structured and supportive environment that fosters academic preparation along with independent learning and intrinsic motivation. We are fortunate to be part of WBMS.

- White Bear Montessori is everything I hoped for for my two boys! My favorite aspect is that they are allowed to learn about what they are interested in at that moment and at their own pace. If they excel at reading, they are allowed to spend as much time exploring this activity as they desire. They are presented with many different materials to support their particular interests. At the same time, they are gently encouraged to also work on areas they feel less comfortable in. By the end of the year, they have spent time in a variety of topics and have progressed or excelled in all of the expected areas. They are also taught to be well-mannered, well-spoken and responsible individuals. They learn appropriate conflict-resolution techniques. Many parents complement us on our boys...but I recognize a lot of the credit goes to White Bear Montessori!
