  • I am a former student at Gracewood Elementary. I'm 64 years old so you can imagine that it's been a "while". I attended first, second, third and part of fifth grade, living just about 100 yards away.

I started first grade in 1948. In September of 1949 I encountered the most "fearsome" teacher of my life (of whom my cousins and friends had no good words to say.)First grade was a breeze and third grade was intellectually stimulating but second grade was the path that had to be walked between the two.

After three college degrees, 37 years of military service and a number of years of attempting to teach "management and leadership theory", I can say without reservation, that anything she might have failed to teach me, didn't mean anything, anyway. She was, simply put, the most extraordinary adult in my young life.

I last drove by the school in the summer of 2003. It doesn't look much changed but I know Emma is no longer there. When it's time for a statue or monument to this amazing woman, please put me on your list of donors.

Thank you, Gracewood School. I owe most of what I accomplished in this life first to Emma.

    Tom Verdel
