  • I wanted to address why I have decided to remove my child from this school with 2-3 weeks to spare. Since the beginning of this year, my daughter has asked the faculty at this school to look into several children that have antagonized her in the classroom and on the bus, yet, nothing has been done to discipline the children that have attacked her on the bus with a shoes, pushed her around in the classroom and lunchroom, and more recently 2 children who tried to bend her arms back, as if to break them. As a concerned parent, I took time off from my job to discuss these issues with the faculty, only for future incidents occur and existing problems to increase. The last straw was when I was told that the offending child was having “home issues” and that they were working with him on his anger issues, all I could do at that point was instruct my child to defend herself. If a child is having issues at home that are affecting my (or any) child from their right to an education, since when is right to allow this child to do as he pleases while my child suffers? I instructed my daughter to push, kick or hit them back, since the aggressors seem to be the only ones the school protects.
I can’t tell you how happy I am for my daughter to be leaving this school, so I don’t have to wonder about her safety at school anymore. (How ironic-I moved to Des Moines from California to give her a wholesome education, free of all the distracters of the big city, and I traded a school in which she never had to worry about anything for a school that can’t protect her on any given day) I can only hope that someone does something about the troublemakers of this school and the obvious absent level of caring for children from the adults, who go desperately to the them for guidance and protection, as there is a serious bully problem that is not being addressed, and before my child becomes an unnecessary statistic, I would rather she stay at home until our departure, than to end up in the emergency room and me in a courtroom testifying against this school, because a teacher was too busy to break up a fight or too scared of what the bully’s parents might do.
My child has told me about countless issues on the evening bus, in which the first bus driver would just keep driving while the children curse and fight. Turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the situation is not going to make it go away. In fact, according to my daughter and another child, several children have been beaten so severely, that they have ended up in the hospital, and their parents have gone so far as to not allow them to ride the bus, fearing that worse could happen. The alternate bus driver is worse, as he listens to his iPod while driving a bus full of kids. There is obviously a safety issue (like not hearing emergency vehicles and children fighting on the bus) that needs to be addressed immediately, as again, while he is driving, the kids are chanting “fight, fight”, and some child is being beat up or slammed into the metal and glass.
Des Moines Public Schools, you are behind me now, and after tomorrow, you will have one less child and her parents to fear that your bullying issues will get out like so many other school systems across this nation. Its no wonder why everyone else is leaving for Carlisle and other school districts in droves. As much as I hate moving, I am glad to be rid of this sub-standard school. I can only hope that the few children left that are trying to learn can do so without being harassed by some abusive child with poor family life that feels it necessary to infringe on another child’s right to a safe environment in which to learn.
