My opinion is based on our family's personal experiences thus far. (Please note that personal opinions are considered to be free speech, protected by the US First Amendment. No students or staff are named here.)

While the principal is a friendly and likeable person, we have found certain members of the disciplinary staff to be extremely ineffective. My son has been horribly bullied. When the bullying was reported, the dean did nothing to resolve the problems even after my son was physically attacked. Finally, my husband had to insist that my son's teacher/class be changed because the original teacher failed to protect, or even supervise the bully's interaction with my son as he had promised to do. Recently, another student committed a theft against my son -- it was witnessed by other students in addition to my son. However, the two staff members decided that the student who stole from my son was innocent in spite of the witnesses and even in spite of the student admitting participation in accessing my son's personal possessions without his permission. When our requests for explanation were received with an unusually high level of hostility, we were confounded. (The student was caught red-handed with hand in the cookie jar, so to speak, and the fact that "cookies" were missing was "just a coincidence.") The two staff members are apparently friends with that student's family etc. The matter was totally mishandled and our son was treated like he was a criminal for reporting the theft. He was admonished for even complaining while the thief received kind smiles. According to other families I've talked with, the discipline staff has also failed to protect their children in similar situations. Bullies and thieves are given free range while well-behaved students are supposed to suffer in silence. Reports of maltreatment are swept under the rug, apparently so nothing ends up being reported officially. Any incident is dismissed as erroneous and/or unfounded. If your child does attend JHMS, prepare your child to be exposed to extreme bullying and theft of personal possessions. And, should your child fall victim to the predators at JHMS, whom go unchecked for the most part, do not count on real help from the administration at JHMS or Seminole County Public Schools. Children and parents who report crimes which occur at the school are labeled and ridiculed while the bullies and thieves are treated like celebrities. I've yet to figure out why. Additionally, be aware that when you're told that the school has a 98 percent approval rating by parents and students, that is a misleading figure. In actuality, less than 10 percent of the parents of students return the surveys, and somehow any surveys which contain complaints or negative comments, well, those surveys are mysteriously discarded. Only have your child attend this school as a last resort, when no other options are available to you.
